Surah Lahab is on of the 114 surah of Quran Pak. The literal meaning of Lahab is red that is why this Surah is named as Lahab with the reference to fire. In this Surah ALLAH cursed Abu Lahab and his wife and warned them of their destruction.

Who was Abu Lahab?

Abu Lahab was the uncle of our beloved Prophet (p.b.u.h) who was an idolater and the biggest enemy of our beloved Prophet (PBUH). He was a very beautiful man with red face and red eyes. His real name was Abdul Uzza means the worshipper of Uzza( a renowned idol of that time) and his nickname was Abu Lahab due to his beauty. Similarly he was a very angry and ferocious man.

Revelation of this Surah

It is a Makki Surah and has five verses only. It is the 111 surah in Quran.

History of Surah Lahab
This was the surah which was one of the first revelations on our beloved Prophet (PBUH). This was actually the fifth revelation on Prophet Muhammad. This was the second complete Surah which was revealed soon after Surah Fatiha which the the first one to be revealed as a whole Surah.
For the very first three years of preaching, our beloved Prophet did it to a low scale but when Allah revealed to him that He (P.B.U.H) should preach openly then He (P.B.U.H) stood on the highest place and called for everyone( as it was the common practice of that time that when a person had to inform others about a calamity, he stood on that place and call all of them). People of the surroundings gathered and then our beloved Prophet (PBUH) started preaching Islam to them. Abu Lahab after hearing the message of Allah said that this is what you are calling all of us. May your hands be ruined (na auz billah). At this, Surah Lahab was revealed in which Abu Lahab and his wife was cursed by Allah(SWT).

Other name

It is also called as Al Masad which means the palm fibre. This name was taken from the last verse of this Surah. The wife of Abu Lahab loved to wear necklaces for which she was known. In the last verse of this Surah, Allah mentions that Hell fire in the form of palm fibre will be hanged in the neck of wife of Abu Lahab as a necklace.

Explanation of Surah Lahab

As it was mentioned above the first verse of this Surah was revealed and cursed Abu Lahab that his hands will be ruined and he will be ruined as well. The second verse shows that all the wordly income and money of his will not be beneficial for him in any way. Abu Lahab was from the elite class of that time and the minister of wealth amd his wife was also from the tribe of elite class and very arrogant and beautiful. In the third verse it was said that he will be thrown into the hell fire which is as red and ferocious as he was. In fourth and fifth verse, it was revealed that the wife of Abu Lahab was also thrown into the fire and she will increase and raise the fire of hell for herself and Abu Lahab. The necklace of her neck will be then hanged in her neck as hell fire.

Aim of Surah Lahab

This Surah was aimed to show that the enemies of our beloved Prophet (P.B.U.H) and enemies of Islam are soon be destroyed and hell is their final and everlasting destination.
Secondly the worldly blessings and status are of no use until one believes in Allah and His Prophet (PBUH).

Significance of this Surah

In this surah, different messages are given to humans.
Firstly, the last and most worst kind of people are mentioned in this Surah which are sure to be going in the hell. The other categories of worst people of hell will be mentioned in another article. In this Surah, the worst woman and worst man in this world are mentioned by whose example Allah had shown us the standard. They were the people who had gone to every limit to tease our beloved Prophet and in their enmity.

Secondly, Allah has also shown us that the relationships are of no use until one is firm in his faith on Allah. Nothing in this world can benefit one until he believes in oneness of Allah. Like Abu Lahab was the uncle of our beloved Prophet (p.b.u.h) but he was an idolater and his relation to our Prophet(p.b.u.h) is of no use.
Thirdly, it was shown that all. The worldly blessings like wealth, beauty and status are the gifts of Allah. The only thing which can make one loveable by Allah or hated by Allah are his deeds or misdeeds.
