The word “Kauthar” is derived from word kathir which means plenty of something.

Translation of Al Kauthar

Indeed, We have granted you, [O Muhammad], al-Kauthar.
So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone].
Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off.

Revelation of Al Kauthar

This is the shortest Surah of Quran with only three verses. It is a Makki surah.

Why it is called Al Kauthar

Kauthar is the name of a water fountain in Jannah. This is the mother of all the fountains in the world and in the Jannah. Its water is most water and most clear. This surah was named over that fountain. So ALLAH gave this news to Prophet(P.B.U.H) that Kauthar is a gift of ALLAH to his beloved Prophet(p.b.u.h).

History and Explanation of Al Kauthar

This Surah was revealed at a very crucial time of the life of our beloved Prophet (p.b.u.h) which his infant son Abdullah was died. At that time, Prophet was mocked by his neighbor and uncle Abu Lahab and he was celebrating that there is no one left to spread the message of Islam after Muhammad. Now the rein of Muhammad had ended. Prophet(p.b.u.h) was so depressed and aggrieved. Then this Surah was revealed. After reciting this Surah, our Prophet(p.b.u.h) smiled and said that this is the surah which is more precious to me in this whole world and its things. ALLAH through this Surah consoled Prophet and reminded him(p.b.u. h) of His blessings and ensured him that ALLAH will mock the ones who are making fun of the Prophet.

Importance of Al Kauthar

This is one of the most important Surahs of Quran. In Al Kauthar, ALLAH had consoled the Prophet and showed him His love and care for Prophet. ALLAH reminded him that he should not be aggrieved at the baseless talks of the ignorant people because he is rewarded by ALLAH. Sacrificing something in the path of ALLAH is not actually a loss but a gain in the afterworld. And all those who want to diminish the name of ALLAH and His Prophet will be demised soon.

Aim of Al Kauthar

The aim of this surah is to make one realize that the words of one can hurt someone which is not acceptable in Islam. Abu Lahab is considered the most worst enemy of Islam and Prophet because he hurts Muhammad with his words. So it is very necessary to keep a check on ones uttered words specially to their families.
Secondly, sacrificing something in the way of ALLAH is beneficial and it is not a loss but a gain. In addition, one should not be bothered about the opinions of others when following the path of ALLAH. The degrading and mocking comments of others are to refrain from the path of ALLAH so be firm and ALLAH will reward you in this world and in Jannah as well.

Benefits of Al Kauthar

• It can calm a depressed and aggrieved person.
• Tells one about the importance of sacrificing something in the path of ALLAH.
• It teaches us that if someone is going through a hard time then others should console them but at the same one giving them the recovery time .
