Salat ul Jummah is a type of prayer which is offered in the mosque in congregation instead of zuhr prayer.

Meaning of Jummah

The word al-jumu’ah is derived from an Arabic word ijtimah (gathering people together).

What is Jummah

Friday is called the Yauwm al jumu’ah in Arabic. It means the day of Assembly and jummah is the sixth day of the Islamic week.

Importance of Jummah

Blessed day

Jumu’ah is considered a blessed day and holds a lot of importance in Islam.

Strengthening the Bond

It is called the day of congregation, Muslims come together in mosque which strengthens the bond between the Muslims.

Invocation on Jummah

A invocation made on day on jummah is always accepted by Allah.

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) as saying: There is a time on Friday at which no Muslim servant would pray and would ask Allah for a thing (that is good) but He would give it to him. Qutaiba pointed with the help of his hand that it (the time) is short. Sahih muslim book of jummah hadith 1969.

Two Adaan

There is a contradiction amongst scholars about one adhan for jummah or two. At the time of Prophet Muhammad, only one adaan was proven and second adaan was started at the time of Hazrat Usman ghani when people could not hear the voice of adaan.

Khutbah (Sermon)

What is a Khutbah

Khutab is derived from an Arabic word خطبة which means sermon and it is basically held before the Friday prayer.

Who Helds Sermon or Khutbah

The khateeb (person who is in charge and qualified of delivering sermon) gives khutbah in the mosque to the persons who comes to offer prayer.

What is Said in the Khutbah

Khutbah is about Islamic teachings and islamic matters of the people present in the mosque for the Friday prayers.

When Khutbah can be Delivered

The khutbah can be delivered to the people present for weekly Friday prayers and annual rituals i.e. Eid ul fitr and Eid ul Adha.

History of Khutbah

The origin of delivering khutbah was found from the times of the Prophet Mohammed (P.B.U.H). He (P.B.U.H) used to deliver khutbah’s regarding exhortation, instructions, commands and teachings of Islam at the gathering of ibadah (worship) in the courtyard of his house in Madinah.

Jabir b. Samura said: The Apostle of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) gave two sermons between which he sat, recited the Qur’an and exhorted the people. Sahih muslim book of jummah hadith 1995.

Procedure of Salah e Jummah

Wudu (ablution) or ghusl (ritual purification)

To perform any salah wudu is obligatory, without wudu salat is invalid.

In case of Friday prayer ghusl is prescribed for the one’s who are attending the Friday prayer because the Prophet Mohammed (P.B.U.H) emphasized on taking ghusl on Friday but it is mustahab (allowed) not obligatory according to majority of fuqa’ha.

Abdullah is reported to have heard Allah’s Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) as saying: When any one of you intends to come for Jumu’a prayer, he should take a bath. Sahih muslim book of jumah prayer hadith 1951

Clothing

Wearing nice and clean clothes are always preferred for salah. Clothes containing najaasah (impurity) are not prefered for praying.

Intention

The person must have the intention of praying the Friday prayer.

Congregation

A person must pray the Friday salah in congregation. Minimum 5 to 7 people should be present at the congregation of salah according to different scholars.

Khutbah

There are different views on attending khutbah. According to some scholars, a person must attend khutbah in order to pray salah ul jumua’ah.

Two Rakat Salah

After the khutbah has been delivered the iqamah is given and the people stand to join the imam with the intention (neyah) of praying two obligatory fard rakahs.

Offering Duhr Prayer after Jummah Prayer

The person who offers Friday prayer behind imam must not offer duhr prayer. If someone has missed his Friday prayer in congregation than the person must offer duhr prayer.

Sunnah Acts and Virtues on Friday

There are alot of sunnah acts we find from the authentic hadiths of the Prophet Mohammed (P.B.U.H). We are going to mention some of them to enlighten the fact of the importance of jumua’ah and how a person should spend his day of Jumua’ah.

1. Early to Mosque

A person must go to the mosque for Friday prayer as early as possible. It does not mean that 10 minutes before the khateeb gives khutbah but an hour or more early.

2. Clipping Nails.

One should clip his nails on Friday.

3. Taking Ghusl
Before offering the Friday prayer one should take ghusl (details of ghusl are mentioned in the section of purification)
4. Using Miswak

Using a miswak is also a ritual of jummah. Miswaq is a tree twig used to clean the teeths.

5. Applying perfume.

Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Allah has made this day of Friday a celebration for the Muslims. Whoever comes to Friday prayer, let him bathe himself, apply perfume if he has it, and use the toothstick. Sahih Muslim book of jummah hadith 1960.

6. Walking to the Mosque

If it is possible for the person then he should walk to the mosque.

7. Read Surah-al-Kahf on Firday.

Amra daughter of Abd al-Rahman reported on the authority of the sister of Amra: I memorised (surah) Qahaf, by the glorious Qur’an from the mouth of the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) on Friday for he recited it on the pulpit on every Friday. Sahih muslim book of jummah hadith 2012.

8. Sitting close to the imam in first rows.
9. Listen to Khutbah (Sermon) Attentively.

Whoever does ghusl, then comes to Jumu’ah, and prays what is decreed for him, then listens attentively until the khutbah is over, then prays with him (the imam), will be forgiven (his sins) between that and the next Jumu’ah, and three days more.
Narrated by Muslim (857)

10. Praying Tahiyaat ul Masjid

Prayer two rakats of salah before sitting in the mosque is also a sunnah . If imam is delivering the sermon make the rakats short.

Jabir b. ‘Abdullah reported that a person came (in the Mosque) while the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) was delivering the sermon on Friday (standing) on the pulpit. He (the Holy Prophet) said to him: Have you offered two rak’ahs? He said: No. Upon this he said: Then observe (them). Sahih muslim. Book of jummah hadith 2021.

11. Stepping over People while Imam is Delivering the Khutbah

The practice of stepping over the other poeple must be avoided. One should try to come to the mosque early but if he could not make it then should sit where he gets the place.

12. Make Dua Abundantly

As it was described above one should invocate on Friday for the purpose of repentance in the special hour.

Proof from Quran

Allah revealed a whole chapter on the name of Friday And it shows the importance of salat ul jumua’ah (Friday prayer).

O ye who believe! When the call is proclaimed to prayer on Friday (the Day of Assembly, yawm al-jumu’ah), hasten earnestly to the Remembrance of Allah, and leave off business (and traffic): That is best for you if ye but knew!
And when the Prayer is finished, then may ye disperse through the land, and seek of the Bounty of Allah: and celebrate the Praises of Allah often (and without stint): that ye may prosper. Surah Al Jumah verse 9-10

The verse above shows the importance because Allah order Muslims to leave the work and all worldly matters and should go to offer Friday prayer.

Proof from Hadith

After Quran we find a lot of authentic ahadiths regarding Friday, Friday Salah and the importance of Friday and salat ul jumua’ah in all hadith books.

Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺhad said, “The best day during which the sun have risen is Friday. It is the Day Adam was created. It’s the day when Adam entered paradise and also when he was taken out from it. It is also the day on which the Day of Judgment takes place.“sahih muslim. Book of jummah hadith 1977.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “When the day of Friday arrives there are angels upon the door of every mosque to record those who arrive in order and when the Imam sits to deliver the sermon they close their scrolls and come to listen to the remembrance. The example of one who arrives earliest is like one who offers a fine camel, then the next is like one who offers a cow, then the next is like one who offers a ram, then the next is like one who offers a chicken, then the next is like one who offers an egg.” Sahih muslim book of jummah hadith 1984.
