Allah made this beautiful and huge world for us. He made skies, clouds, earth, bird, animals and many other things for us to see and cherish them. Allah also made hundreds of edibles for man to eat and enjoy. There are many varieties like vegetables, fruits, meat, fishes and many more. All these things are beneficial for human body but there are some food items which are prohibited by Allah for their harmful effects.

Prohibited food items

There are some food items which are prohibited by Islam. It is mentioned in Surah Al Maida verse 3 that

Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah , and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars, and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through divining arrows. That is grave disobedience.

It is also mentioned in Surah Al Inaam verse 145 that

Say, “I do not find within that which was revealed to me [anything] forbidden to one who would eat it unless it be a dead animal or blood spilled out or the flesh of swine – for indeed, it is impure – or it be [that slaughtered in] disobedience, dedicated to other than Allah . But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], then indeed, your Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.”

The categories mentioned are

1. Carrion means animals dead by itself
2. pets like dogs, horses, donkey
3. Blood and its by products
4. Pork
5. Animals being slaughtered without uttering the name of Allah
6. Halal animals dedicated to other than Allah
7. Vermin or reptiles
8. Birds with claws
9. Metamorphosed

Carrion

A carrion is the meat of a dead animal which is dead by itself or any other animals without intervention of a human being. According to Quran, the animals dead by itself are haram for human consumption as these are harmful for us.

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Abbas: Once Allah’s Apostle passed by a dead sheep and said (to the people), Why don’t you use its hide? They said, But it is dead, He said, Only eating it, is prohibited.  Sahih bukhari book of slaughters and hunting hadith 5531

Why is it prohibited?

1. An animal dead by himself attracts bacteria and insects which starts to decompose and breed on the body of the animal. Then this animal becomes contaminated and is injurious to health.
2. The animal may be died of some disease or attack of some poisonous reptile so consuming it may result in death of human beings.

Pets like horse, donkeys

Pets are also prohibited to eat. There is no mention of these in Quran but Hadith tells us about its prohibition. Dog in general is a najas or impure and a canine like cats so it is haram to consume as a food product. Horse, donkeys, elephants are prohibited because these are used as a mean of transport.

Proof from Hadith

Narrated Salama bin Al-Aqwa’: In the evening of the day of the conquest of Khaibar, the army made fires (for cooking). The Prophet said, For what have you made these fires? They said, For cooking the meat of domestic donkeys. He said, Throw away what is in the cooking pots and break the pots. A man from the people got up and said, Shall we throw the contents of the cooking pots and then wash the pots (instead of breaking them)? The Prophet said, Yes, you can do either.’ Sahih bukhari book of slaughter and hunting hadith 5497

Narrated Ibn `Umar: The Prophet made the meat of donkeys unlawful on the day of the battle of Khaibar. Sahih bukhari book of hunting and slaughter hadith 5521

Blood

Blood is a by product of meat but it is haram even if it is of a halal animal. Blood is equivalent to lean meat and also called as liquid meat. It is a mixture of water and proteins. The blood is consumed by the wild animals when they eat those dead animals so it is a sign of their wildness. Any thing which shows wildness is prohibited in Islam. in present times, the followers of Satan drinks blood in order to show their faith in Satan.

Pork

In Islam it is prohibited to eat pork and its by products. It is also mentioned in Quran very clearly. Besides Quran, it is also prohibited in Torat and Bible as well.

Proof of Pork as haram in Quran

He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah . But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], there is no sin upon him. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. Surah al Bakarah verse 173

Say, “I do not find within that which was revealed to me [anything] forbidden to one who would eat it unless it be a dead animal or blood spilled out or the flesh of swine – for indeed, it is impure – or it be [that slaughtered in] disobedience, dedicated to other than Allah . But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], then indeed, your Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.” Surah al inam verse 145

He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah . But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit] – then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. Surah al Nahal verse 115

Species of pig

Pig belonged to the family of goats and sheep but it is a flesh eating animal instead of grass eating. In Islam, flesh eating animals are prohibited whereas grass eating animals are allowed. But pig does not fall in the category of both the species properly. This is another reason of its being prohibited.

Lawful for you are the animals of grazing livestock except for that which is recited to you [in this Qur’an] Surah Al Maida verse 1.

Why pork is haram?

1. Pork is najas physically so it is prohibited.
2. It is scientifically proven that by eating flesh of swine, one can develop not less then 70 different diseases.
3. It is also proven from science that when one eats the flesh of any animal more often, it behaves like that animal so pig is a very shameless animal as it enjoys to watch his mate to have sexual intercourse with any other pig. This is the very case in western countries where people swipe their partners with their friends for one night just for fun.
4. Pig is a filthy animal which eats its own feces and feces of other animals so it is bad for ones health.
5. Pin worms, round worms and tape worms can develop in ones blood. If one cooks the pig properly, the eggs of tape worm do not die and can dissolve in ones blood and reach every part of the body. These eggs can grow in each and every part of human body including brain and results into various and irreversible damages like brain hemorrhage, heart attack, blindness, intestinal problems etc.
6. It causes obesity.
7. It results in hypertension.
8. Causes MRSA disease in which one becomes resistant to antibiotics and it can lead to death.
9. The blood of pork has a tendency to absorb poisonous materials so when a person eats it, these can be absorbed in the body of human beings and can lead to death.
10. The digestive system of pig is very fast so the food dissolved in its body at a very high rate which decreases the nutritional values of that food which means the meat of pork has no or very less nutritional value.

Is one allowed to kill pigs?

No, Allah does not command Muslims to kill pigs. It is only prohibited to eat its flesh or to deal with it due to his being najas physically but it is not commanded to kill pigs.

Animals being slaughtered without uttering the name of allah

It means that animals which are not slaughtered according to the Islamic rules of slaughtering (zabeeha) should not be eaten. So while slaughtering an animal uttering the name of Allah is necessary. The animal slaughtered properly by people of book according to verse 5 of Surah Al Maida can be eaten. There are some regulations about slaughtering animals in Islamic ways. The sea food is an exception to slaughtering as Allah made all sea food Halal in verse 96 of Surah Al Maida.

Lawful to you is game from the sea and its food as provision for you and the travelers.

The animals which are not slaughtered according to Islamic ways are not halal but haram. The haram ways are
• One stroke slaughter
• Electronarcosis in which animal is rendered unconcious and then electric shock is given.
• Captive bolt pistol method
• Gunshot
• Stunning

Halal animals dedicated to other than Allah

The animals which are dedicated to other than Allah are also haram in Islam. In Verse 3 of Surah Al Maida it is mentioned as well.

why it is haram ?

It is the authority of Allah to give life and death and the animal which is killed by taking the name of Allah over it shows that the person is denying the authority of Allah over death of that animal. This is why it becomes haram.

And do not eat of that upon which the name of Allah has not been mentioned, for indeed, it is grave disobedience. And indeed do the devils inspire their allies [among men] to dispute with you. And if you were to obey them, indeed, you would be associators [of others with Him]. Surah al Inaam verse 121.

Vermin or reptiles, birds with claws, wild animals

These are haram as well because all the flesh eating animals, birds or creatures are prohibited for man. These categories show the wild behavior of these creatures and Allah prohibits all of these for their wildness. The blood consumption is also haram because it is an act done by wild animals who drink the blood of their pray as well.

Narrated Abu Tha`laba: Allah’s Apostle forbade the eating of the meat of beasts having fangs. Sahih bukhari book of slaughter and hunting hadith 5530

Narrated Abu Tha’labah Al-Khushani: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prohibited (eating) every predator possessing canine teeth. Jam e tirmazibook book of hunting hadith 1477

Metamorphosed

Insects and animals who have gone through process of metamorphosis are also prohibited. These are butterflies, bees, grasshopper, frogs, toads, salamanders, newts, caecilians etc.

When can a Muslim eat haram meat?

A Muslim cannot eat haram meat unless there is a matter of life and death.

It us also mentioned in surah al Inaam Verse 145 and Surah al Nahal verse 115 that a person when in danger of death can eat the flesh of a haram animal.
