Music is an ancient act which attracts man towards itself. Its our foremost duty to know that music is permissible in Islam or not?

History of Music

After the death of Habeel (son of Adam A. S) Allah blessed him with another son named Sheeth A. S Who was also a Prophet. At that time, Kabeel who was very arrogant left the mountains ( where Adam A. S and his children were living) and started living on land with his children. Satan joined the group of Kabeel (son of Adam A. S who killed Habeel) by disguising himself and starting making sounds and instruments.

This was the start of the time so no one heard such sounds before and they were amused by such sounds and then Satan started playing his game by making them dance on the beats of drums and flutes. They literally spare a night for dance parties. That was the 2nd sin which was taught by the Satan to people (first one is ofcourse the disobendience of Allah to Prophet Adam A. S) even shirk was not introduced by Satan at that time. This shows that music is the root cause of all other sins as by spreading music,  Satan made them to indulge in dancing and adultery.

Music at the Time of Prophet (P.B.U.H):

The practice of music was common at the time of Prophet (P.B.U.H). Non- believers used to beat music instruments and sing songs to annoy Muslims when they were praying or reciting Quran.

 Music and Devil

There is a close connection between music and devil(satin). This is the reason Allah declared it to be haram or impermissible.

  • Calling of devil:

Music is considered as the calling or Adan of satin because devil calls human beings towards sins through music.

  • Effect on Human Behaviour:

It is proven by science that anything heard by a human several times or repeatedly have great impact on his brain so when a human hears a song or other repeatedly, the unconscious of his mind start acting in the same manner.

  • Aberrant Behaviour:

The poetry of the songs effect the human mind and behaviour and forces them to involve themselves in sins.

  • Distance between ALLAH and Believer:

The relationship between the creator and creation is actually weaken by this very manoeuvre. Music distant the listener from the creator.

  •  Indulgence towards Sins:

When a person becomes habitual to listening music, he starting indulging in other sins as well like dancing, addictions, sex and many more.

  • Use of Foul Language:

The songs are filled with foul words and the listener does not consider using these words wrong in their normal day to day routine. Using foul language is prohibited in Islam as well.

 Why Music is Prohibited

Music is the very nature of human. A mother sings a lullaby for her kids, the chirping of birds, the music made by leaves is the natural phenomenon and. It is not prohibited. The music actually is prohibited due to reasons which are described below.

  • Use of musical instruments and foul language in songs.
  • Other sins which are an outcome of music
  • The bad impacts of music on life
  • The distance between the creator and creation caused by the music.

Prohibited Musical Instruments

The musical instruments which have strings like guitar, violin, piano etc and instruments which makes music by blow of air into them like flute, gramophone etc are prohibited in Islam. Tambourine is not prohibited in Islam as it is proven by some Hadees that women during the time of Holy Prophet used to beat tambourine and our Holy Prophet(P.B. U. H) did not stop them. But if the foul language is being used with tambourine as well then it makes it haram as well.

 Hamd and Naat with Music

Hamd and Naat are the poetries use to praise Allah and Holy Prophet(p.b.u.h) respectively. If these two are also read with a background music or with some musical instruments then it becomes haram and prohibited as well.

Recitation of Quran is the Food for Soul

Reciting Quran is the food for soul. It provides peace to the soul but when a person does not recite Quran then the soul becomes restless and starts finding peace in meaningless things like music. As a unhealthy diet is bad for our body, likewise the music is unhealthy and bad for our mental health.

Quranic Verses and Hadees about Music

In verse number 6 of surah Luqman it is narrated that

  • And of the people is he who buys the amusement of speech to mislead [others] from the way of Allah without knowledge and who takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment
  •  And incite [to senselessness] whoever you can among them with your voice and assault them with your horses and foot soldiers and become a partner in their wealth and their children and promise them.” But Satan does not promise them except delusion. Surah bani israel verse 64

Hadith about Music

  • After me there will be some people from my ummah who will make genital, alcohol, silk and musical instruments permissible for them. 7.494
  • Prophet of Allah said that Allah has sent me to destroy all the musical instruments, idols and things liked by satan19.5
